Not every home is the right candidate for a heat pump or mini split — and we won't tell you it is if it isn't. The right answer depends on your home's size and layout, your existing heating and cooling equipment, how well-insulated the building is, and what problem you're actually trying to solve. Some homes are excellent candidates for a full heat pump system. Others are better served by a mini split in a specific area, or by keeping conventional equipment and adding a mini split where it makes sense. We'll give you an honest read.
Heat Pumps: Heating and Cooling From One System
A heat pump moves heat rather than generating it — in summer it works like a central air conditioner, and in winter it reverses the process to bring heat into the home. Modern heat pumps have improved significantly in cold-weather performance, and properly selected equipment can provide effective heating through much of a Michigan winter.
That said, cold-weather performance varies by equipment, and not every heat pump is designed for the same conditions. Ductless Mini Splits
A ductless mini split uses one or more wall-mounted (or ceiling-mounted) indoor heads connected to an outdoor unit. Each indoor head serves a specific room or area directly — no ductwork involved. This makes them well-suited for additions, finished spaces, or areas where running conventional ductwork isn't practical. Multi-zone systems can serve several rooms from a single outdoor unit, with each zone controlled independently.
Ducted Mini Splits
A ducted mini split uses a compact concealed air handler connected to short duct runs, rather than a visible wall-mounted head. The indoor unit can be tucked into a ceiling, closet, or mechanical space, and the system delivers conditioned air through registers like a conventional system. Ducted mini splits retain many of the efficiency and control advantages of inverter-driven technology while keeping the equipment out of sight — a good fit for spaces where a wall-mounted head isn't preferred.
Where Mini Splits Make Sense
Mini splits aren't the right answer everywhere, but they solve real problems in specific situations.
Home additions and new finished spaces
Extending existing ductwork to a new addition is often impractical or expensive. A mini split can serve the new space independently without touching the rest of the system.
Upstairs rooms and bonus areas
Upper floors and bonus rooms are often the hardest areas to keep comfortable with a central system. A mini split can address the comfort problem in that specific zone without oversizing the whole-house equipment.
Homes without existing ductwork
Older homes with radiators or baseboard heat, or homes that were never ducted, are natural candidates for ductless systems — heating and cooling without a full duct installation.
Zoned comfort
Multi-zone mini split systems let different areas of the home operate at different temperatures independently. This can be useful in homes where occupancy patterns, sun exposure, or layout create uneven comfort.
Replacement and retrofit applications
In some cases, replacing aging window units or electric baseboard heat with a mini split is a practical upgrade — better comfort, quieter operation, and both heating and cooling from one system.
